NEW YORK (AP) — Third-ranked Xavier looks every bit the top seed in the Big East Tournament after an 88-60 win over St. John’s today. Trevon Bluiett scored 27 points and Kaiser Gates had 16. Afterward, the teams scuffled on the postgame handshake line and had to be separated. The Musketeers, who are 28-and-4, dominated in the second half on the Red Storm’s home court at Madison Square Garden. Xavier plays the winner of the Providence-Creighton game in a tourney semifinal Friday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Reggie Theus is out as men’s basketball coach and Brandon Martin has been let go as athletic director at Cal State Northridge. MIAMI (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Miami Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry has signed his $16 million, one-year franchise tag, easing the path to a potential trade. The Dolphins have been shopping Landry, and the procedural move allows them to trade him as early as next Wednesday, when the NFL’s new year begins.
UNDATED (AP) — Derrick Rose has signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the remainder of the season. The move reunites Rose and Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau, who were together in Chicago. Minnesota technically becomes the 2011 NBA MVP’s fourth team in the last 11 months. Rose spent his first eight NBA years in Chicago, five with Thibodeau as his coach. He was with New York last season and started this season with Cleveland, but appeared in only 16 games with the Cavaliers.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is strongly leaning toward not taking part in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game. The 2017 AL Rookie of the Year, who had 52 homers and 114 RBIs in his first full major league season, won the derby last season in Miami. He says it was a “cool experience,” but added, “I don’t think I really needed to go out there and do it again.”
