After two weeks of rehearsal 23 teens will be on the stage of the Mount Logan Middle School on Saturday, August 1 and Monday, August 3 presenting the fun Caribbean-style musical Once On This Island.
Music Theatre West is producing the Olivier Award-winning show, and executive director Debbie Ditton says it is an adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid.
Ditton says this is the TRUE version of The Little Mermaid, not the Disney version. So what is the difference?
“Well in the Disney version it’s happily ever after,” Ditton explains. “In the Brothers Grimm fairytale she doesn’t get the man. In The Little Mermaid one she turns into sea foam and just watches over him over the years.
“This has a little bit of that same flavor where she actually turns into a tree and her roots break up the walls that are keeping the rich, mulato people of the Antilles Island away from the peasant people. It brings the community together.”
Ditton says the show is appropriate for all ages and there is a suggested donation of one to two cans of food for the Cache Community Food Pantry. She said, however, no one will be turned away who wants to see the performance.
