LOGAN— There is constant activity at the Utah Legislature, but Speaker of the House Becky Lockhart said it’s calm compared to what it will be later this month when state budget projections for 2014 come in.
On KVNU’s For the People show Wednesday, Lockhart said it’s the budget that really drives the session.
“So much of that is dependent of the action or inaction of the federal government. We’re kind of waiting to see what Congress does in the next little while,” Lockhart said. “They have this arbitrary date, I believe it’s March 1, to make some more decisions. We’ll be looking very carefully at what we do there, and how that affects the national economy, which in turn will affect the Utah economy.”
Lockhart said she told the representatives at the opening of the session that she hoped they would use restraint. She said there are so many bills, that they need to ask themselves are they all really necessary.
