Richmond man dies after semi crash in Montana

A Richmond man was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Montana, north of Yellowstone National Park.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Randy Nielsen was driving a semitrailer on Highway 84, about seven miles east of the town of Norris.

Just after 5 p.m. the westbound truck approached a right-hand curve, crossed the center line and hit a guard rail. The semi-truck rolled onto the driver’s side and hit a delivery truck.

Deputies report Nielsen was wearing a seat belt but died from his injuries.

Two men were travelling in the delivery truck. The driver was injured and had to be hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger was unhurt.

Montana Highway Patrol troopers suspect speed was a factor in the crash. The roads were dry at the time, and there was no indication of alcohol or other impairment.

According to his Facebook page, Neilsen was an avid outdoors-man and loved hunting and fishing. He operated Neilsen Elk Ranch, west of Richmond.

Funeral services are still being arranged.
