PROVIDENCE – Just one day after being diagnosed with leukemia, Providence City Council member and Utah State University professor Jeff Baldwin passed away. Providence City announced the passing on Facebook Thursday morning.
“It is with heavy hearts, that we say goodbye to our friend and Council Member, Jeff Baldwin,” the city stated in the social media post. “We received word early this morning that Jeff passed away about 9:00 pm Wednesday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Jeff cared deeply about his family, his community, and people in general. He will be missed.”
Providence Mayor John Drew said he was visited by Baldwin and his wife Tuesday. Baldwin told Drew that he visited his doctor earlier that morning, was diagnosed with leukemia and told he had 10 days to live.
“Speaking to the city staff I have to say that we were totally shocked and stunned by the news and it’s pretty quiet around here,” Drew said Tuesday.
An online fundraiser has been set up by members of the USU community to help cover funeral expenses. That can be found at this link.
Baldwin joined the City Council in 2014 and was reelected during the most recent election. According to USU.edu, Baldwin was a professor in the Agricultural Systems Technology and Education Department.
