Police arrested a 44-year-old Smithfield man Tuesday after a traffic chase that started in Logan and ended in Smithfield. Ramiro Garcia was booked into the Cache County Jail on suspicion of failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, assaulting a police officer, driving under the influence and other offences.

Officers began looking for a maroon Toyota Camry around 1:30 p.m. after a Logan City Police officer attempted to pull the vehicle over. The car was travelling north on 600 W. in Logan driving around 70 mph, when the pursuit was terminated.

Smithfield City Police Sgt. Gary Bunce said officers located the Camry minutes later travelling north on US-91 near Lee’s Marketplace. When officers attempted another traffic stop, the vehicle failed to yield and again began to try and speed away.

The chase continued for about a mile, until the Camry struck one of the officer’s vehicles near 100 N. There were no injuries and Garcia was taken into custody without further incident.

Bunce said officers detected the smell of alcohol when they arrested Garcia. His demeanor also led them to believe he was intoxicated.

Garcia is being held on $18,270 bail. Formal charges are pending the completion of an investigation.

Court records show, Garcia is already facing several other misdemeanors for intoxication and public urination from an incident earlier this month.
