HYRUM — It’s not unusual to see blankets, chairs and even yellow tape reserving space along Hyrum’s Main Street several days before the community’s annual Star Spangled 4th of July Celebration. Many families reserve seating space in the same place each year and “premium parade real estate” goes fast.
New in 2017, however, Hyrum City leaders have made the announcement, publicized with signage throughout the city and in Hyrum City’s monthly newsletter, that there will be “NO RESERVING SPACES” along the parade route until 5 a.m. the day of the parade. There will also be no parking along the parade route from 5 a.m. until the parade ends.
A notice in Hyrum City’s June newsletter reads:
“Property along the parade route can only be marked off and saved the day of the parade beginning at 5:00 a.m. Anything marked before that time will be removed. Over the years we have experienced damage to property as well as problems mowing and watering to prepare for our celebration. Please help us inform others from our surrounding communities of this change.”
Hyrum City leaders say the change was implemented for two primary reasons—to help the event be more welcoming and to prevent property damage. City Administrator Ron Salvesen was not available for comment, but a city employee speaking unofficially said Salvesen implemented the change because Hyrum City wants the parade to be a friendly event where “everybody feels like they can be included the day of.”
“The other reason,” she explained, “is for the property owners to be able to maintain their property. There’s been damage in the past from chairs and blankets being laid out for that length of time before the parade.”
She said Hyrum City officials believe parade spectators will be able to find plenty of seating without needing to reserve places days in advance.
“My husband and I have lived here for three years, and every year we go down right before the parade, and we always find a spot,” she said. “I’m not 100% sure why everybody puts their stuff out in the first place. We’ve always found a spot to sit and it’s been fine. There’s plenty of space all the time.”
Hyrum City’s Star Spangled Celebration parade starts at noon on July 4, beginning at 700 E. and following its traditional route along Main Street to the intersection of 200 W. and 200 N.
