United Way to honor three Cache Valley advocates

When United Way holds its annual fundraising dinner on Friday, May 5, three Cache Valley residents will receive recognition for their local contributions. Doug Stevenson, United Way’s executive director, said the event will take place at the Riverwoods Conference Center in Logan, beginning at 6 p.m.

Stevenson said the evening’s keynote speaker will be Chad Hymas, a resident of Tooele who became a world champion wheelchair athlete after breaking his neck in an accident. One of the event’s honorees, he said, will be Sammie McFarlane, director of Common Ground Outdoor Adventures. Common Ground, he said, provides great assistance to people with disabilities.

“She’s been the director I think for over 20 years,” she said, “and they’re just getting ready to complete their facility up on Beaver Mountain so that they can take individuals who are handicapped skiing during the winter and enjoy doing that.”

Stevenson said the others being honored are Roger Jones, executive director of the Bear River Association of Governments, and Sandy Emile, executive director of the Cache Chamber of Commerce.
