Now that a water district is about to become a reality, Cache County Council members are taking a look at another major project: a fairgrounds event center.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the council heard from an architect and others who see it as a good idea.
Council chairman Greg Merrill says there are a lot of old buildings at the fairgrounds now that need to be repaired or replaced. An events center would help make it a great place to go.
“I personally think it will open up several opportunities for organizations to utilize the fairgrounds and a center such as this,” explains Merrill, “that they’ve not had before. As I say, once those conventions or organizations come in they bring in a significant amount of money through hotels and restaurants and so forth.”
Merrill says it is estimated that the kind of center the council is looking at would cost in the neighborhood of $5.6 million. Various options for funding an events center were discussed and will be continued at a later meeting.
