Cache County Sub for Santa welcomes applicants/seeks donations for Christmas 2016

A plush Santa is surrounded by Christmas gifts for low-income Cache Valley children.

Cache County Sub for Santa has been serving local families in need at Christmastime for more than 40 years. With the 2016 application deadline, December 5, 2016, quickly approaching, the organization has already received 162 applications, representing 400-500 children.

“What makes this program most meaningful to me,” said Shanae Ames, Cache County Sub for Santa director, “is knowing there are kids that are going to be warm and cared for and happy this year. The people in this valley are so generous. We don’t ever have a child go unsponsored.”

Earlier this fall, however, coordinators feared that Cache County Sub for Santa might not have sufficient funding to fulfill children’s Holiday wishes. The program’s 2016 fundraising goal is $30,000, and contributions are still hovering at the halfway mark. Ames is hopeful that the season’s sluggish start does not reflect its conclusion.

“Once people know, they have a tendency to donate,” she said.

Most of Cache County Sub for Santa’s funding supports providing Christmas gifts for children, usually one “want” and one “need.” The program also has operating expenses like insurance, postage, taxes, and utilities. In the past, the largely volunteer-run organization has also employed four paid staffers to administer the program.

“This year,” said Ames, ”we’re all volunteers. It’s more important that these children have their needs met than that we get paid.”

Despite Cache County Sub for Santa’s current budget shortfall, Ames nonetheless encourages families who meet the program’s low-income requirements to apply on behalf of their children, ages 18 months to 18 years.

“We hope we see their applications come in next week,” she said. “We really hate to reject somebody because they didn’t get their application turned in on time.”

In order to provide gifts for as many qualified children as possible, Cache County Sub for Santa offers multiple ways for community members to get involved.
