The USU Credit Union, a division of Goldenwest, has committed $2 million to the Utah State University football stadium renovation.
“We are passionate about supporting Utah State,” said USU Credit Union Division President David Butterfield. “The stadium renovation project will help elevate Aggie athletics to even greater heights.”
Kerry Whalen, president and CEO of Goldenwest Credit Union, said the credit union board is deeply committed to its investments in Cache Valley and to USU.
“When we asked the board of directors to support the stadium project, the response was overwhelmingly in the affirmative,” Whalen said. “It is the right thing to do.”
John Hartwell, vice president for Athletics and athletic director, said the gift is the fifth seven-figure gift the university has received toward the stadium renovation.
“In consideration of this gift, the south and west concourses will carry the USU Credit Union name,” Hartwell said.
Robert Behunin, vice president for advancement, said the idea for the gift came about when the university first started talking about a naming opportunity for the south concourse and didn’t know who to go to for help.
“We floated the idea with Kerry and David just to have them help us identify prospects, and their response was, ‘Well, that might be a great project for us to be involved in,’” Behunin said. “And then David and Kerry made it happen.”
“We value our partnership with USU Credit Union,” said USU President Stan Albrecht, “and we are confident we can leverage this gift to do even more.”
The stadium gift comes in addition to USU Credit Union’s previous commitment of just over $3 million to construct a new University Welcome Center. That project is currently under way.
