Aggies continue win streak against UVU

LOGAN – Chris Smith scored 17 and Lew Evans had a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double in Utah State’s 81-55 victory over Utah Valley Tuesday night.

“It was an in-state game, we wanted to make a statement,” said Jalen Moore, who added 11 points of his own. “I think we did tonight.”

Smith helped keep USU in the game early by scoring 9 of the team’s first 13 points. The Aggies were trailing 10-6 until a 12-1 run highlighted by a Jalen Moore alley-oop started USU’s lead that grew through the end of the game. A 3-pointer by Julion Pearre at the 4:32 mark put USU up 14 and the Aggies entered halftime with a 44-31 advantage.

“I thought (UVU’s) gameplan to start the game was tremendous in trying to use what we do pressure-wise against us,” USU head coach Tim Duryea said. “Credit to our guys, we made a couple of adjustments there and I thought we firmed-up defensively, handled them on the boards and offensively I thought we did a good job sharing the ball.”

During the last two games, the Aggies had shown a tendency to slow down after gaining big first-half leads, but that wasn’t the case today. USU kept piling on the points and outscored the Wolverines 37-24 during the second half.

“We wanted to make (the first-half lead) a bigger lead,” Moore said. “We came out and kept playing defense, scored the ball and made it so they couldn’t guard us.”

Two former Aggies took the court in Wolverine green. Forward Konner Frey and guard Marcel Davis each played a game in the Spectrum for the first time since transferring from USU. Frey led UVU with 14 points, Davis added 8 points and 6 rebounds.

“You know Marcel and Konner were going to come in here and play really hard and show us up a little bit,” Moore said of his former teammates.

The Aggies are now 4-0 on the year and will travel to North Carolina to take on the defending national champion Duke Blue Devils Sunday afternoon.
