USU volleyball announces 2016 signing class

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head women’s volleyball coach Grayson DuBose officially announced the 2016 signing class on Tuesday with the Aggies set to bring in four for the 2016 season. The group includes Ashley Wesenberg (South Hill, Wash./Emerald Ridge HS), Ashlee Thornock (Evanston, Wyo./Evanston HS), Madi Olson (Alpine, Utah/Lone Peak HS) and Jaysa Funk (Alpine, Utah/Lone Peak HS).

“We are excited about the potential of this recruiting class. It addresses some immediate needs along with some future ones as well,” DuBose said of the group. “These kids understand that getting to college is just the beginning of the journey. They are willing to put in the work to help our program continue to improve and grow.”

Wesenberg, a 6-foot-4 middle and right side, is a three-year letterwinner for Emerald Ridge HS, helping the team to a state runner-up finish during her senior year. Wesenberg plays club with the Puget Sound Volleyball Academy, helping the team to a pair of regional championships and three straight national bids.

In addition to performing on the court, Wesenberg is also strong in the classroom, appearing on the honor roll each year and earning Student Scholar-Athlete honors three years in a row.

“At 6-4, Ashley Wesenberg adds some length to our roster,” DuBose said. “She is capable of playing the middle and the right side positions. She is a wonderful addition to our program and we are looking forward to working with her next season.”

Thornock, an outside hitter from Evanston (Wyo.) High School, helped the Red Devils to a runner-up finish at state during her senior year and a pair of conference championships as a four-year letterwinner. Along the way, Thornock was a three-time all-conference and two-time all-state honoree, with her individual awards culminating with a Wyoming Player of the Year award following her senior year.

“Ashlee Thornock has developed into a fabulous volleyball player and she has the desire to continue to improve,” DuBose said. “She makes her teammates better and that is a nice quality.”

Olson and Funk are current teammates at Lone Peak High School in Alpine, Utah, helping the Knights to a No. 3 seed in the 2015 state championships. Funk earned a pair of all-region accolades as the setter for LPHS and was also strong in the classroom, earning academic all-state honors. Olson was the starting libero and team captain for the Knights and led the team in digs as a junior and senior, wrapping up her final year with 356 and averaging 3.8 per set.

“Having Madi Olson join our program is a great thing. She is a great volleyball player and an even better person. As she learns the college game, she will add to our backcourt dynamic,” DuBose said. “Jaysa Funk is from a family of Aggies. We have wanted her in our program for a long time and are excited to have her finally be here next season. She is a great competitor and lifts those around her.”

Utah State will return to the court this week, traveling to New Mexico on Wednesday, before hosting the 2015 home finale against Air Force on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Aggies then punctuate the 2015 campaign at Boise State on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
