You are never too young or too old to volunteer according to Sharilee Griffiths, Executive Director of the Cache Valley Volunteer Center who also says there will always be people and organizations needing volunteer help.
Griffiths loves her job because she feels that volunteering does so much to bring a community together. The Volunteer Center is located at 160 North Main in the Cache Chamber of Commerce building but she says much of the work can be accomplished online.
What kind of work do volunteers do? She says almost anything, sometimes changing with the season.
“Right now one of the big things that we have that people are looking at a lot is helping get ready for winter,” Griffiths says. “Whether they are organizations that need help getting their grounds cleaned up or we also have citizen-assist program where we take groups of volunteers and go around to help the elderly and those who need extra help, for whatever reason.”
Griffiths says among the most common kinds of volunteering are mentoring, whether it is for academic or other reasons and helping out in situations where there has been an accident or perhaps a hospitalization.
If it’s the Saturday before Thanksgiving, it is also Family Volunteer Day in Cache Valley. As Griffiths says, every day is volunteer day for her and she’s happy about that because there are as many needs as there are people to volunteer.
Griffiths says Family Volunteer Day comes up on Saturday, November 21, and it’s going to be special.
“What we really encourage is the family volunteering together,” Griffiths says. “When we say that, it’s not just mom and dad and the kids necessarily. USU students have a different family while they are here at school. People can pull together whatever family happens to be for them.”
Griffiths says it’s a great way for parents to teach children the value of volunteering and also a great way to open the Christmas season.
There are also a lot of prizes to be given away and you can <a href=”http://cachevolunteercenter.org/” target=”_blank”>register on the website</a>.
