Latest Warren Miller movie premieres in Logan

LOGAN — A sold out crowd packed into the auditorium of Mount Logan Middle School Thursday night to see the latest Warren Miller ski movie, “Chasing Shadows.”

Gary Nate, who worked for Warren Miller as a cameraman years ago, has brought the movie to Logan for the past 35 years. He said this year’s show features incredible skiing and boarding from around the world and some of it was filmed in Utah.

“A lot of our athletes actually live here and train here in the Salt Lake area,” said Nate. “So we have quite a few local people in this film and a lot of local Utah. We also go to Katmandu and Valdez, Alaska.”

This year’s movie also features Cache Valley native Jeremy Jensen, owner of Grassroots Powdersurfing, a manufacturing company that makes “Powsurfers,” a cross between snowboards and smaller sized surfboards.

The movie shows Jensen snowboarding here in the Bear River Mountain Range and in Snake Creek Canyon, along the central Wasatch Mountain range.

“People think that when you get rid of the bindings that you are going to be confined to these really mellow slopes,” said Jensen. “It’s not like that. Once you dial in the skills and get use to the board feel and everything, you can take those boards almost anywhere that you would ski or snowboard.”

Jensen has spent his life snowboarding and works at Utah State University as an adjunct professor and videographer for USU public relations and marketing.

Nate said one of his favorite scenes from this year’s movie was shot in Katmandu, and shows kids learning to snowboard.

“It really touches your heart,” said Nate. “Warren once said, ‘if everyone skied, there would be no war’ and I believe him.”

The movie will be shown again Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30, with a matinee Saturday afternoon at 3:00. Tickets are available at Al’s Sporting Goods.

Nate said each person who attends the movie will receive free lift tickets to Solitude, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley.
