Logan-Cache Airport experiencing period of growth

The Logan-Cache Airport is the only airport in the state of Utah to have an authority board and John Kerr told members of the Logan City Council on Tuesday that he enjoys being chairman of that board which has been in charge of operations and all that goes on at the airport over the last 23 years.

Kerr said since then 40 hangars have been built with a value of more then $10 million dollars while the value of all the hangars built before that was $1.7 million.

Kerr said the Logan-Cache Airport is currently enjoying a period of growth.

”Two taxi lanes are being opened and additional hangar spaces are being made available,” Kerr said. “We currently have applications in process for two corporate hangars on the north part of the airport where that expansion has been taking place.”

He said there is enough land at the airport to take care of growth for the forseeable future. Although at times the Chamber of Commerce and others have pursued the idea of a scheduled airline at the airport he does not believe that will be happening in the near future.

Kerr told the council that approximately $170,000 is collected in property taxes on the hangars each year and land leases can be added to that. He said the airport handles about 60 flights a year for Utah State University athletic teams and the teams that come in to compete against USU.

“An average of three out-of-town corporate aircraft use the airport each day. Examples are JW Swift, Campbell Soup, UPS. Few people in the valley are aware that UPS has a freight flight into the Logan airport every week.”

Kerr said during the last quarter the airport has sold 60,000 gallons of fuel, and the Airport Authority Board collects .04 cents per gallon on everything pumped.

Among local businesses using the airport are Campbell Scientific, Wasatch Properties, Cache Valley Electric, Sox, Harris Research, Space Dynamics Laboratory, Miller Trucking and Watershed Research.

Kerr said the department of transportation has suggested that the businesses that use the airport to aid their business generate about $5 billion annually. He noted that the airport is a much more accessible place than it would be otherwise.
