There are just a few tickets left for the 7th annual Night of Giving to be held Saturday, December 7 at the Birch Creek Golf Club in Smithfield. The popular event is hosted by the Greater Smithfield Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber President Rigo Shapiro says a dinner and auction is held each year and the proceeds go to provide Christmas for local families in need.
On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Monday, Shapiro said the Chamber has raised over $70,000 through the Night of Giving and the goal is to help everyone who cannot otherwise afford a Christmas. Shapiro said he lived in Mexico until 1979 and knows what that is like.
“Being in Mexico without Christmas, I’ve lived that and it’s hard,” Shapiro said. “Seeing others get things, showing up to school the next day and not having had Christmas, as a kid that’s pretty hard.
“So we’re just trying to help better the few of the families that are in need here locally.”
He said businesses have donated gift packages and trees that will be auctioned off to earn money for the needed Christmas gifts. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the auction begins at 7:45.
