Logan Fire Marshall expects 2013 to be another busy year

LOGAN— It’s the start of a new fire season and Logan Fire Marshal Craig Humphreys expects it to be a busy one. On KVNU’s “For the People” show Monday Humphreys said the city’s fire personnel not only fight fires, but they also provide paramedic services for the entire valley.

“Right now, we’re staffing three departments throughout Logan City. Each one of those departments are staffed 24 hours a day, and in each station there are three shifts. We staff it as best as we can with what the city provides for us,” Humphreys said. “Right now we’re maintaining a good call volume, and we’re also maintaining a good staffing level that’s able to handle those calls.”

Humphreys said Logan Fire also responds to calls involving special rescue situations, confined spaces and many different emergency situations.

Along with the new fire season, comes some new rules and regulations.

The Utah Division of Air Quality is required to record open burning throughout the state by the EPA and Cache County Fire District Chief Rod Hammer said a website has been created and some new rules will be going into effect on March 30.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Monday, Hammer said the rules are different for open burning and agricultural burning.

“Fire has been a good tool for thousands of years on farming and some of the agriculture stuff, and I think when the legislature put the rules together, they recognized that – and we do as well,” Hammer said. “The agriculture burning doesn’t require an open burning time period, agriculture burns are allowed throughout the year. One thing they want to look at, those who are burning should look at, is the wind conditions.”

Hammer said farmers are asked to look at the clearing index as well, and that agricultural burn rules only apply to those areas zoned non-residential.
