Denver wins at Utah State 67-54

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Rob Lewis and Chris Udofia scored 15 points each as Denver ran past host Utah State 67-54 Wednesday night, ending the Aggies’ 33-game home winning streak.Lewis made 6 of 8 shots while Udofia had six rebounds. Brian Stafford also scored 12 for the Pioneers (5-1) on 5-of-9 shooting.Preston Medlin led Utah State (3-3) with 13 points, while Brockeith Pane added 12 points and Morgan Grim scored 11. Utah State’s home-court winning streak was the third-longest in the nation.Denver led 34-29 at halftime, and by double figures for most of the second half. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 65-45 with 2:20 to play when Udofia made two free throws followed by a back-door wide-open layup.Denver shot 52 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. Chase Hallam made three of his four 3-point tries.The Pioneers were also credited with 16 assists to six for the Aggies. Denver frustrated Utah State with quick exterior passing which often ended in an unguarded shot attempt. Denver came into the game leading the nation in free-throw shooting at 84 percent. The Pioneers went 9-for-11 (82 percent) against USU.The Aggies’ Adam Thoseby was scoreless against Denver after posting a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in Utah State’s previous game, a victory at Idaho State. Utah State’s only lead was at 4-2.Denver led 31-14 with 6:10 to play in the first half after Blake Foeman made a layup to end a 10-2 Pioneer run. USU then went on a 15-3 run of its own, closing the gap to five points at halftime.Denver will join Utah State in the Western Athletic Conference next July, along with new members Texas-San Antonio and Texas State. Wednesday’s meeting was the 89th time the Aggies and Pioneers have tangled, the fourth-oldest rivalry in Utah State’s history, holding a 54-35 advantage.
